About This Watercolor Painting
This painting was inspired by a quiet morning on Long Island Sound, out on the water under a bright, steady sun. As I moved across the water, I noticed a group of seagulls resting on a rocky breakwater. What first caught my attention wasn’t just the birds, but the way everything in the scene resolved into subtle, interconnected color and light.
The rocks and birds carried a soft blue-green cast, with deeper shadows falling into rich, dark blues. In contrast, the sky opened into a pale, luminous yellow near the horizon, while the water stayed an almost weightless aqua—flat, calm, and completely still. There was no wind. No movement in the surface. Just light, space, and silence.
That kind of stillness on the ocean has always stayed with me.
