Lifeguard Station 19 — GOUACHE

$350.00

Lifeguard Station 19 Fort Lauderdale Beach bright coastal light, ocean, sky, and beach grasses in a colorful, sunlit scene.

Description

I created this Lifeguard Station 19 Fort Lauderdale Beach painting after noticing the striking midday light along the A1A sidewalk. The bright white structure and clean shadows immediately stood out against the ocean, sky, and beach grasses. In this post, That moment became the starting point for this painting, which I developed from a loose pencil sketch into an ink and wash study, and finally into a full gouache piece.

About This Gouache Painting

This piece focuses on capturing the intensity of midday coastal light and the contrast it creates across simple forms. The bright structure of the lifeguard station stands against softer natural elements — ocean, sky, and beach grasses — creating a balance between structure and atmosphere.

Layered gouache allows for both bold color and subtle transitions, giving the scene depth while preserving a sense of light and openness. This piece developed from sketch to final gouache painting — you can view the full process in my blog post.

Artist Notes

I was walking along the A1A sidewalk when Lifeguard Station 19 caught my attention. The midday light was striking the bright white structure, creating strong, clean shadows that immediately stood out.

I wasn’t sure at first what medium I would use, so I began with a pencil sketch to understand the composition. From there, I developed the piece through an ink drawing with a watercolor wash, and finally completed it as a full gouache painting.

That progression allowed me to explore both the structure and the atmosphere of the scene, building toward a more complete and vibrant final piece.
