Description
Great Blue Heron at Salt Marsh is an original gouache wildlife painting inspired by quiet evenings kayaking through coastal marshes at low tide. Viewed from water level among the tall marsh grasses, the Great Blue Heron stood motionless in the fading light as warm reflections moved across the shallow tidal water. That peaceful coastal moment became the inspiration for this painting.
Created using layered gouache on paper, the painting captures the atmosphere of the salt marsh at sunset — rich dark marsh grasses, soft reflected light, and the calm presence of the shorebird within its natural habitat.

About This Gouache Wildlife Painting
This painting began without a pencil sketch, allowing the dark marsh patterns and flowing grasses to emerge directly through layered brushwork. Using gouache paint made it possible to gradually build atmosphere, texture, and depth while preserving the softness of the evening coastal light.
Many of my coastal wildlife paintings are inspired by time spent kayaking through tidal marshes with a sketchbook or camera nearby. From water level, the marsh grasses rise dramatically around the shoreline, creating a completely different perspective than viewing the landscape from land.
The Great Blue Heron was added later using field sketches and reference photos captured during these quiet moments along the coast.

Artist Notes
I wanted this painting to capture the stillness of the salt marsh at low tide — the layered grasses, reflective water, and the quiet presence of the heron standing near the edge of the tidal flats. Gouache paint allowed me to build soft atmospheric layers while maintaining the rich dark contrasts found in the marsh during evening light.
